Proton-coupled electron transfer.

چکیده
Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) is an important mechanism for charge transfer in a wide variety of systems including biology- and materials-oriented venues. We review several areas where the transfer of an electron and proton is tightly coupled and discuss model systems that can provide an experimental basis for a test of PCET theory. In a PCET reaction, the electron and proton may transfer consecutively (ET/PT) or concertedly (ETPT). The distinction between these processes is formulated, and rate-constant expressions for the two reaction channels are presented. Methods for the evaluation of these rate constants are discussed that are based on dielectric continuum theory. Electron donor hydrogen-bonded-interface electron acceptor systems displaying PCET reactivity are presented, and the rate-constant expressions corresponding to the ETPT and ET/PT channels for several model reaction complexes are evaluated.

متن کاملTheoretical perspectives on proton-coupled electron transfer reactions.
This Account presents a theoretical formulation for proton-coupled electron transfer reactions. The active electrons and transferring protons are treated quantum mechanically, and the free energy surfaces are obtained as functions of collective solvent coordinates corresponding to the proton and electron transfer reactions. Rate expressions have been derived in the relevant limits, and methodol...
متن کاملRegulating proton-coupled electron transfer for efficient water splitting by manganese oxides at neutral pH
Manganese oxides have been extensively investigated as model systems for the oxygen-evolving complex of photosystem II. However, most bioinspired catalysts are inefficient at neutral pH and functional similarity to the oxygen-evolving complex has been rarely achieved with manganese. Here we report the regulation of proton-coupled electron transfer involved in water oxidation by manganese oxides...

Light-induced charge separation in molecular assemblies has been widely investigated in the context of artificial photosynthesis. Important progress has been made in the fundamental understanding of electron and energy transfer and in stabilizing charge separation by multi-step electron transfer. متن کاملTheoretical formulation for electron transfer coupled to multiple protons: Application to amidinium–carboxylate interfaces
This paper presents a theoretical formulation for electron transfer coupled to the motion of multiple protons. This theory is applied to proton-coupled electron transfer ~PCET! through amidinium– carboxylate salt bridges, where the electron transfer reaction is coupled to the motion of two protons at the proton transfer interface. The rate for the donor–~amidinium–carboxylate!–acceptor system i...
متن کاملPhotochemistry between a ruthenium(II) pyridylimidazole complex and benzoquinone: simple electron transfer versus proton-coupled electron transfer.
A ruthenium(II) complex with two 4,4'-bis(trifluoromethyl)-2,2'-bipyridine chelates and a 2-(2'-pyridyl)imidazole ligand was synthesized and characterized by electrochemical and optical spectroscopic means. The respective complex has the potential to act as a combined electron-proton donor when promoted to its long-lived (3)MLCT excited state with visible light. The possibility of proton-couple...
